Happy Pepero Day!
Today, Canadians will honor war veterans by taking part in Remembrance Day services. And today, Koreans will celebrate Pepero Day. A special day to give and receive a "stick biscuit" from your loved ones.
Pronounced by Koreans as Pe-Peh-ro (I've got to be honest, it sounds like they are speaking Italian when they say it), Pepero is a brand of cookie, a long, thin crunchy wafer half dipped in chocolate. This day was created simply for the fact that the date is November 11 ( 11/11) which looks like 5 sticks, hence the stick shaped treats. Ahh, good fun.
For a mere 500 won ( or .51 cents CAD) you can pick up a basic box of these tasty treats. If you want to show you really love someone though, you might opt for the almond/chocolate stick, or perhaps even the strawberry/ banana variety. You chose.
On Friday, my students celebrated the day by passing out packages of Peperos to all their friends. I was prepared to be left out of these festivities as, let's be honest, I have no personal relationships with my students. But ahh, it turns out they do love me too:
Even Cate joined in the fun.
