And the Search Continues...

For the missing kidney.
Most of you probably don't know that our little Maggie was born without her right kidney. We were told this news at our first ultrasound at 22 weeks and it was confirmed at birth. Although it is not something to worry about, the doctor's caring for Maggie would still like to know for sure that there isn't a small kidney somewhere in her body ( which can happen in development- it gets lost in transfer). Her left kidney is functioning perfectly ( to this point), and thankfully that is all humans need. Obviously she can never be a kidney donor, and any type of infection or injury of her kidney is serious (again, thankfully these are rather rare). There is also debate amongst doctors on whether people born with one kidney should play high contact sports. But besides these things, there is no reason to believe that she will live a life any different from her siblings or peers.

Tomorrow we'll return to the Alberta Children's Hospital for another ultrasound to look for the missing kidney and also to check kidney and bladder function. We had an ultrasound when Maggie was one month old and it was totally painless , but I still don't' look forward to dr. visits of any kind. This time around she can't eat within three hours of the appointment, so I'm setting my clock for 6 am to get one good feed in before we go.

Here is the little sweet pea in all her incredible sweetness.

  1. Carmen & David - Be assured of our prayers as you take our sweet little munchkin Maggie to her appointment. I'm sure everything will turn out just fine but it is still really important to check everything out. Hoping she (and the rest of you) will be OK with all the poking and probing...

    Love,

    Mom and Dad

  4. Yes, how did it go?
I think that Maggie looks exactly like you did as a baby in the last few pictures that you have posted.

  5. Thanks for asking!
The appointment went great. We don't have any results yet, but she was a trooper and was pretty relaxed throughout the whole thing. We have an appointment with the nephrologist at the end of May to discuss.

Chan, that is so funny that you say Maggie looks just like me! Mom just told me that she doesn't see any of me in her. :)
